Haven't heard of Honk? Honk! is a popular British musical retelling Hans Christian Andersen's timeless tale of the Ugly Duckling by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (who also wrote the book and lyrics for Mary Poppins). Honk! was the 2000 winner of the Olivier Award for Best Musical beating out both The Lion King and Mamma Mia but did not earn more American awards because Stiles and Drewe chose not to take Honk! to Broadway although they had two offers. When questioned why, Drewe said. "Whereas, to do what we're doing with it, which is more like [the path of] Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat — starting it out in the provinces — it starts a whole groundswell of interest. We've turned down two Broadway offers. We don't rule it out as a possibility, we just don't want it to spoil what, at the moment, is happening and which we're rather enjoying, which is seeing all these productions around the world now — some at schools, some at community theatres and some at big professional theatres. There are dozens."
Hello Broadway is excited to produce this classic tale as an opportunity to share the music, the important message that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and should always be proud of who you are, and it's always fun to do a show with British accents!
